Knowing Yourself Inside and Out and Exploring Careers
In this section you will learn about career planning, problem-solving and critical thinking, and college options/ opportunities; which will, help you focus on the positive aspects of your personal identity: that are your individual strengths, talents and personal characteristics that will help you realize success in your lives.
Don't forget to print out a hard copy of the training agreement and training plan, get it signed off on and turned into my mail box or under my office door (E108). HTC Students can turn it in to Joe or Lea and they will make sure I get it.

Know Yourself Task 2.1
You will be able to discover that self-knowledge is a journey; understanding himself/herself better through experiences, assessments, reflection and feedback; identify his/her strengths/positive characteristics.
Task 2.2 Interpersonal Skills
Communication Skills- You will be able to understand the importance of both verbal and non-verbal communication; understand that there are different communication styles; understand the importance of communication skills at work.
Students will be able to understand the importance of setting boundaries and how to set boundaries; understand that conflict can be positive if handled effectively; understand the benefits of negotiation; and understand different team player styles.
Task 2.3 Exploring Careers
Students will be able to discover how their interests, skills, personality and values can help them explore careers that might be a good match for them; and understand that there are numerous jobs in one career cluster.
You will be able to increase your understanding of “growing careers”; you will also apply your knowledge, skills, and understanding of your interests and values towards choosing careers of interest to explore further.

Please watch the following video (Link posted below) and describe what the interviewee did wrong. Saying, "everything"- will not work as the answer...please e-mail your teacher at tmmezzenga@distirct287.org or share in a google doc. with a detailed answer about the things she did and why they are not good things to do when interviewing.
Section #7: Strategies for Success
Topic/Purpose: To obtain basic strategies and skills that will increase readiness for a new job, raise ability to obtain new employment, and then be able to successfully maintain their working status and job advancement. Students will learn how they can prepare for success at work, including what they can do to obtain a job and tips for keeping their job; helps students understand characteristics and practices of work success.
Unit Objectives:
Students will be able to demonstrate work safety and etiquette in the workplace in a professional manner.
Job Readiness Task 7.1 Motivation and Initiative
You will be able to understand what it means to take initiative; the importance of taking initiative at work; and how motivation is connected to taking initiative.
Choose and display five “teamwork” quotes (see Team Work Activity attached) What is important here is the quote – and not necessarily who said the quote. Choose the quote you like best. Discuses the quote and come to consensus on the reason you liked it the best.
Task 7.2 Workplace Safety
Students will be able to understand workplace hazards and some things he/she can do to stay safe at work; students will be able to better understand workplace safety laws, child labor laws, and her/his rights on the job.
Task 7.3: Technology Etiquette in the Workplace
Technology Etiquette in the Workplace -Students will be able to understand the basics of technology etiquette in the workplace; the importance of having a professional e-mail address and voice mail message; and the potential risks and benefits of social networking sites.
7.4 What’s Next-
Topic/Purpose: To teach students the basics of successful, work-place communication skills and budgeting as it relates to income and lifestyle choices. Students will plan for their future, set goals and learn to cope effectively with challenges.

Tips for Your First Days at a New Job - Students will understand the importance of making a good impression on his/her first days of a new job; and understand how to make positive first impressions.

You will be able to understand the new employee payroll process including the forms that need to be filled out and the documents that need to be copied by an employer. You will be able to understand how to read your paycheck stub. You will also learn how to set-up a bank account and how to balance a check-book.
Given copies of W-4 and I-9 forms, you will know how to fill them out and know what the purpose of each form is.
Note: If you currently have a job and understand how to complete your W-4 and I-9 forms you can skip this sections.

Students will be able to understand that you can’t really manage time, you can only mange yourself and your use of time; how setting goals, planning, organizing, and prioritizing can help you use your time more efficiently.

What is an Internship?
You will be able to understand what an internship is; Google Search for 3 internships. Pick one and tell me about it. How to have the opportunity? How long it lasts? Paid or not? What are your concerns about it, questions you have about it etc. Write up the information you find.

Personal Finance and Budgeting-Why and How to Use a Bank - You will understand the benefits, procedures, and potential pitfalls of bank accounts. Personal Finance and Budgeting: Checking Accounts and Credit Cards -You will understand the procedures, advantages, and precautions of having a checking account and a credit card. Personal Finance and Budgeting: Budgeting - You will understand the meaning of a budget and explore ways to budget effectively.

Week 15: Long-Term Goal Setting
Long-Term Goal Setting-
You will understand and be able to identify long-term goals for their futures.
Task 15.1: Setting A Long Term Career Goal
Now you will create your long term career goal and you will understand what you will need to do in order to reach you goal.
Task 15.2 Moving Forward
You will understand the importance of coping strategies for overcoming obstacles and maintaining a positive attitude; understand what resiliency means; and feel acknowledged and recognized for his/her hard work accomplished in program to date.
Vocabulary Terms
You will be able to define the terms...Annual Fee, Annual Percentage Rate, Balance, Budget, Credit, Debit, Grace Period, Hurdles, Motivation, Needs, Wants and stressors.
Please look up and define each of the terms and submit the answers any way you choose.
Section #16: Wrongful Termination
Minnesota is an employment "at will" state. The employer can fire any employee for any reason as long as that reason is not illegal. If you feel you were terminated because of discrimination based on race, creed, color, sex, national origin, ancestry, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation or marital status, contact the Minnesota Department of Human Rights at
(651) 296-5663 or 1-800-657-3704.An employer must give a truthful reason why an employee was terminated, if requested in writing by the employee. Request must be made in writing by the employee within 15 working days of termination. The employer has 10 working days from receipt of the request to give a truthful reason in writing for the termination.

Section #17: Leaving a Job/Letter of Resignation
When writing a resignation letter, it's important to keep your resignation letter as simple, brief, and focused as possible. It should also be positive.
Once you have made the decision to move on, there's no point in criticizing your employer or your job. Your letter of resignation should include information on when you are leaving.
You can also let the employer know you appreciate your time with the company.
A resignation letter can help you maintain a positive relationship with your old employer, while paving the way for you to move on.

Note: I will be monitoring your job for 1 school year. If you switch jobs, you must inform me so that we have the correct forms for your job so you can get credit for working.
