Special Considerations for Math & Science

Accessible Equations

Text accessibility gets a bit trickier when there are symbols and complex characters involved. While there are many tools for creating equations, these equations are often saved as images not text, making them inaccessible. Work with your Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) Specialists to determine how best to convey Math concepts to individual students.

Both Moodle and Google Drive have an equation editor that creates accessible equations. Microsoft Office documents and PDFs do NOT create accessible equations.

Image Captions

Math and science images also tend to require more in-depth captions and alt text, since they are usually more than just illustrative and convey data, processes, and other pertinent content. If you teach or support students in Math or Science you should view examples of effective captions from the National Center for Accessible Media.
