19 - Heroes of the Sagas

Now that you've got a handle on the Norse gods and their stories, it's time to study the heroes that were shaped by them.

You will be responsible for selecting one of the three sagas listed below for your final project.

Check out The Monomyth to learn more about the Hero's Journey and why we like the kinds of stories we do.

Here’s a folder with PDF or ePUB files of the stories below. If you have an iPad the ePUB format works great for viewing in iBooks. Download and save the file, open in iBooks. Then you'll be able to access features such as highlighting; bookmarking; dictionary; etc.

Sigurd the Volsung - Abridged from the Volsunga Saga. This is the story of the Norse hero Sigurd and tells of his great deeds. This saga is more of a typical adventure story.

The Saga of Grettir the Strong - The story of an Icelandic outlaw.

The Saga of Burnt Njal - This is the (Mostly) true story of Njal and his family.

Step 1: Saga Review/Report - Read this over before you start your Saga. There are questions to be answered before and throughout your reading.

Step 2: Share your reactions/reflections. Please share what you thought of the reading with the rest of us.

Step 3: Create a presentation that outlines how the hero in the saga you chose fits into the Hero's Monomyth.
