activities and strategies to encourage functional pencil grasp

Ways to encourage stability and control within hand –

  • ·         games, projects, tasks that facilitate strong pincer grasp (legos, playdough, coloring, blocks)                                                                              
  • ·         encourage a hand preference, and the other hand is an assist (holding, stabilizing)                 
  • ·         paper taped to blackboard                                                                                                                           
  • ·         lying on stomach on floor                                                                                                                                
  • ·         using smaller pencils, broken pieces of crayon                                                                               
  • ·         utilizing crayons, pencils, chalk on various textured and colored papers, writing on aluminum foil, brown paper ags, wax paper and chalkboards to increase kinesthetic  input

Ways to increase Visual Tracking –

  • ·         Ball activities – tetherball, suspended ball and paper towel roll batting
  • ·         Flashlight games – have child’s flashlight chase teachers, pictures taped up ‘find the --------‘
  • ·         Playing catch while swinging
  • ·         Bean bag toss games
  • ·         Paper scanning games – find the hidden pictures, mazes
