20 - What if?

Most of the time we just read or watch stories and pay little thought to all of the little details that are included to impact the audience. A good author introduces elements that enrich the experience and may allow the reader to more closely identify with the story.

  • How do you think that this story would differ if the letters from Walton were not included?
  • What does his involvement in the telling of this story add to it?
  • What reasons can you think of for Mary Shelley to include him?
  • What assumptions can the reader make about the events of the story because of Walton’s involvement?
  • Bonus question: When his sister finally received these messages what do you think her reaction was?
