Getting Started
Timeline
Typically, we have found that staff would like to have their copies of the book as soon as possible. Access to an audio version of the book has also helped staff complete the book.
It is essential to give students enough time to read the entire book, but not so much time that they lose enthusiasm or momentum. Of course, this amount of time will vary with the student population. At Epsilon, we have found that one week for every 100 pages is a good rule of thumb.
Face to face
Book clubs are all about building a community of readers. For this reason, a face to face rollout of the concept of a book club and the book itself is most effective.
For students who have never experienced a book club before, this presentation may be helpful in setting the scene.
Introducing the book
There are many ways to capture student attention and enthusiasm for the book during a roll out. Effective options include:
- Reading the first paragraph or chapter aloud (especially if it ends in a cliffhanger!)
- Reading a synopsis
- Playing a book trailer (like movies, many popular books have trailers that can be found on YouTube)
